Alex Mayer, 14, is a 9th grader at BASIS Phoenix. He has been playing oboe since 6th grade but began studying music at age three on violin.

He was first chair oboe in both 7th and 8th grade Arizona All-State Bands and has attended various summer camps including Mill Ave Chamber Players Wind Quintet Camp and Curry Summer Music Camp at NAU. In August 2015, he played oboe and English horn for Valley Youth Theater’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Herberger Theatre in Phoenix. He has been playing violin in the Phoenix Youth Symphony Symphonette orchestra and had the opportunity of playing English horn for the 2014 fall concert. Alex studies oboe and English horn with MusicaNova Orchestra’s principal oboist Nik Flickinger and violin with Hisami Iijima. In addition, he plays taiko drum in the Kyo Rei Taiko Kai with the Arizona Buddhist Temple and baritone saxophone with BASIS Jazz Band.  Alex enjoys hanging out with friends and playing a variety of strategy games.

Jessica Zhang, soloist in the MusicaNova Orchestra concert Youthful Variations in October, 2013, returns to grace the Young Artists Series for the second time.  She’s a 13 year old seventh-grader at BASIS School-Chandler

In March 2015, Jessica won national 2nd place in the Music Teachers National Association Junior Piano Competition finals, along with the Chopin Prize from the National Chopin Foundation. She has studied with her piano teacher Fei Xu since age six and has been the first prize winner of many local piano competitions including the 2014 East Valley Music Teachers Association Piano Competition, the 2013 Arizona Young Artist Piano Competition, and the 2013 Avanti Future Stars Piano Competition. At age 11, she made her first orchestra debut with the MusicaNova Orchestra, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 2. In her free time, Jessica enjoys reading and hiking.
