Celebrate the holiday season with festive music from clarinetist Andy Kim, 17, and pianist Zachariah Gass, 18

Andy Kim

Andrew Kim, 16, is a junior at BASIS Ahwatukee. He began playing piano since the age of 8 and later picked up the clarinet at the age of 12. He studied piano under Dr.Yali Luo and currently studies clarinet with Dr. Stephanie Gardner, professor of clarinet performance at GCC. He has also studied under Dr. Robert Spring, Dr. Deborah Bish, and Roeland Hendrikx at the Belgian Clarinet Academy.

Andrew has performed at the Young Musicians Concert at MIM in 2017 and 2018, receiving second place at the Arizona Musicfest Young Musicians Competition in 2019, and he is the Arizona state representative at the Music Teachers National Association Competition Senior Performance Woodwind Division in 2019. Andrew placed first in the Arizona Solo and Ensemble Clarinet division in 2019. He has also studied at the ASU MEF camp, Lamont School of Music, Interlochen Clarinet Institute, and most recently the Belgian Clarinet Academy.

Additionally, Andrew has enjoyed playing in music ensembles. He was the principal clarinetist of the Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestra Symphonette, principal clarinetist at the All-Regionals Band in 2017, the All-Regionals Orchestra in 2018, and the Lamont Youth Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. He has also been a member of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra, the ASU MEF Band, the Arizona All-State Band, and the Belgian Academy clarinet choir.

In addition, Andrew is a volunteer clarinet teacher at MusicaNova education partner Harmony Project-Phoenix, and is a member and a teacher at the Latino Caribena Jazz Band and Latino Juvenal Orchestra.

Outside of clarinet, Andrew is passionate about current political issues and modern history. He enjoys listening to bebop jazz and late-Romantic classical music. He is also very involved in academic competitions, being the team captain and manager of his school’s History Bowl, Junior Classical League, and Quizbowl teams. He hopes to perform in the Lollapalooza music festival one day.

Zachariah Gass

Zachariah Gass, 18, is a senior high school homeschooled student residing in Chandler, Arizona.  Playing since the age of six, Zachariah has been under the instruction of Dr. Baruch Meir of the Herberger Institute at Arizona State University for the past six years.  Most recently, Zachariah was the second-place prize winner in the solo division of the 2018 Carmel Klavier International Piano Competition in Carmel, Indiana.  In 2014 and 2015, he ranked second and third in the Phoenix Youth Symphony Concerto Competition.  Additionally, Zachariah received third place in the junior division of the 2015 Yamaha Arizona Young Artist Concerto Competition, and second place in Division I of the 2015 Arizona Musicfest Young Musicians Competition.  He has also attended Master classes with renowned Irish pianist Dr. John O’ Conor at the Adamant Music School in Vermont.

Zachariah loves spending time with his family, running, bike riding, swimming, and computer science.
