Leo Kubota

Leo Kubota is a 16-year-old junior at Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, and studies cello with Mr. Thomas Landschoot, professor at Arizona State University.  Leo started studying the cello when he was ten with a five-year musical background in piano.

Leo enjoys music especially from the late Romantic and early 20th Century eras, and his favorite composers are Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, and Kodaly.

Leo has performed as a soloist with the Phoenix Symphony in 2018, Montecito International Festival Orchestra in 2017, and FOOSA Philharmonic in 2016 after winning their respective concerto competitions.  Leo also performed at the Young Musicians Concert at MIM in 2019 after winning the Arizona Musicfest Young Musicians Competition, and he was the state winner at the Music Teachers National Associations Competition Senior Performance String Division in 2019.  Leo attended the string program at Meadowmount School of Music in the summer of 2019 and Madeline Island Chamber Music in the summer of 2018.  He was active in the Kubota Duo with his sister Rina, who is now in college, and the duo performed at the Young Musicians Concert at MIM in 2018 after winning 1st prize at the Arizona Musicfest Competition and was featured on FOX10 News in 2018.

Leo has performed in masterclasses by Trio Solisti in 2019 and by Lynn Harrell in 2017.  His former teachers include Dr. Alex Zheng, Dr. Yali Luo, and Ms. Manuela Pagano.

In addition, Leo is a volunteer cello teacher at MusicaNova education partner Harmony Project-Phoenix. Besides music, he finds joy in observing nature, carving, kayaking, and skiing.  Leo will play the cello throughout his life and one day would love to make his own cello.

Kaiden Lee

Kaiden Lee, age 9, is a 4th grader at BASIS Chandler. He started taking piano lessons at the age of 6 1/2 then has studied with Mr. Fei Xu since the age of seven. He was the First Place Winner in 2018 East Valley Music Teachers Association Competition in Category A and 2018 Desert Valley Music Teachers Association Competition. In 2019, he also won the first place in the Angelo and Micheline Addona Arizona Young Artists Piano Competition and East Valley Music Teachers Association Competition in Category B.

In his free time, he likes to read books on quantum physics and physics related math books. He also enjoys bowling, playing golf and building legos with his sister on weekends.
